Bowie Center for the Performing Arts stages Lin-Manuel Miranda’s melting-pot musical ‘In the Heights’

Lights, Camera, Action: Bowie Center Brings "In the Heights" to Life

Before the groundbreaking success of "Hamilton," Lin-Manuel Miranda first captivated Broadway audiences with his vibrant musical "In the Heights." This week, the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts in Maryland is set to bring this electrifying production to the stage, showcasing the talents of a diverse and dynamic cast.

Unlocking the Rhythm of Washington Heights

A Neighborhood's Heartbeat

The story of "In the Heights" centers around Usnavi de la Vega, a bodega owner in the New York City neighborhood of Washington Heights, who dreams of returning to the Dominican Republic to open a tiki bar. However, his plans are complicated when he falls for a local hairstylist named Vanessa. Alongside Usnavi's journey, the musical also follows the love story between Nina, who drops out of college to seek justice for immigrant children, and Benny, her father's employee who keeps the vital work of the local taxi dispatch running.

Melting Pot of Cultures

According to Artistic Director Shawn Cosby, the opening number of "In the Heights" introduces the audience to the diverse tapestry of the Washington Heights community. "The opening number, you meet everybody from the neighborhood … not just Latinos, but Africans in Washington Heights, Asians in Washington Heights, all of that culture melted into this one pot," Cosby shared. The musical's vibrant numbers, such as the high-energy "96,000" and the festive "Carnival del Barrio," showcase the rich cultural heritage and infectious energy of the neighborhood.

A Lifetime of Passion

The production of "In the Heights" at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts is a testament to the lifelong dedication of the CenterStage Academy for the Arts. Founded by Cosby's mother, Sherion, the academy has been a hub for nurturing artistic talent in the community since 1991. Cosby himself has been immersed in the world of performing arts since the age of 7, starting his own dance company at just 15 years old. With a cast ranging from 7 to 85 years old, the CenterStage Academy is a true reflection of the diverse and inclusive nature of the arts.

A Celebration of Home

At the heart of "In the Heights" lies a universal message about the meaning of home. As Cosby eloquently stated, "The premise is that home is where you are loved. Your family doesn't always have to be part of your DNA tree, but God places people in your life and surrounds you with people to take care of you and fill the voids of things you don't have." This theme of finding belonging and community resonates deeply, reminding us that the true essence of home lies not in a physical location, but in the connections and relationships that nurture our souls.

A Captivating Performance

With a cast that Cosby describes as "just that amazing as triple threats," the upcoming performances of "In the Heights" at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts promise to be a truly captivating experience. The audience can expect to be swept away by the dazzling choreography, powerful vocals, and the infectious energy that embodies the spirit of Washington Heights. As Cosby enthusiastically shared, "This cast will bring you to your feet. They are just that amazing as triple threats."
