Michael Russotto's Spectacular 'A Christmas Carol' at Olney Theatre
Charles Dickens' classic novella, A Christmas Carol, has held a special place in Christmas traditions since its 1843 publication. With countless adaptations across various forms, it continues to captivate audiences. This article delves into the unique aspects of one particular adaptation at the Olney Theatre Center.

Experience the Magic of A Christmas Carol in a New Light

Introduction to the Adaptation

The adaptation at the Olney Theatre Center takes pride in its fidelity to Dickens' original words. Out of the original 30,762 words, 12,984 are presented, accounting for 42%. Only 65 words have been added or modified. This ensures that the essence of the story remains intact while making it accessible to modern audiences. 1: The set design at the Mulitz-Gudelsky Theatre Lab is a profusion of Victorian paraphernalia. Books, antimacassars, clocks, and more fill the stage, creating a rich and immersive environment. The angled skylight with broken panes and the three ornate frames add to the visual appeal, changing contents to present different scenes. 2: The technical resources available at the Olney Theatre enhance the presentation. Real candles add a touch of authenticity, and the lighting by Sonya Dowhaluk is terrific. From the backlit Narrator to the footlights that create eerie effects, every detail contributes to the atmosphere.

The Acting

Michael Russotto, who stepped in to play the Narrator due to Paul Morella's illness, delights with his performance. His American accent sets him apart from the Dickensian characters and adds a unique touch. His portrayal of Scrooge is excellent, with his stooped posture and pinched face vividly depicting the character's transformation. 1: Russotto has lively conversations with other characters, each with their own accents and gestures. His portrayal of Fred, the jolly nephew, and Bob Cratchit, the poor clerk, is particularly well-done. He brings these characters to life with his acting skills. 2: However, not all aspects of the acting are perfect. Marley's Ghost, though important, appears with closed eyes instead of the open and motionless eyes described in the book. This detracts from the intended scare factor. The Ghost of Christmas Past also comes across as somewhat coy in Russotto's portrayal.

The Female Characters

The female characters present a challenge in this adaptation. The older women, such as Mrs. Cratchit and the Charwoman, are well-portrayed. But the smaller women's parts seem to lack depth and variety. They are often characterized by simpering, which detracts from their overall impact. 1: Scrooge's former fiancée is acceptable, but there is room for more development. The actresses playing these smaller roles could have been given more opportunities to shine and add more complexity to the story. 2: Despite these shortcomings, the overall performance is a triumph. To be able to present the entire story by heart and capture 50 characters through action and emotion is a remarkable feat.

The Technical Aspects

In addition to the set and acting, the technical aspects of the production contribute greatly to the overall experience. The sound by Justin Schmitz adds to the atmosphere with timely sound effects and spooky reverb. 1: From bell chimes to booming door slams, every sound enhances the story and makes it more immersive. The use of sound in conjunction with the other elements creates a truly magical experience. 2: The combination of the set, lighting, and sound creates a seamless world that transports the audience to Victorian England. It is a testament to the skill and creativity of the production team.Running Time: Approximately two hours, with a 15-minute intermission.A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas plays through December 29, 2024 (Wednesday to Saturday at 7:45 pm; Saturday, Sunday, and December 24 at 3:00 pm), at Olney Theatre Center, Mulitz-Gudelsky Theatre Lab, 2001 Olney-Sandy Spring Road, Olney, MD.
